GUITAR WOODS: LACEWOOD (SILKY OAK)
Lacewood (Cardwellia sublimes/robusta - better known as Silky Oak - although it's not actually an oak),
is a beautiful wood growing in the New South Wales and Queensland area of Australia. It's a pretty big
tree reaching 37 meters height and a diameter of 1,3 mt.
Weight is around 550/580kg/mt3 according to the different
species and the zone where it grows.
Lacewood colour is medium brown and features a very particular grain which sometimes reminds one of snake scales, especially when
quarter sawn.
Lacewood is used either for building bodies or tops or bass' top plates. It features good workability and takes well to steam bending.
It's sound is kind of neutral with good bass definition, a pleasant upper end and a wonderful volume.
